Margaret Peters Hanke

As an artist the challenge is to capture and paint beautiful and interesting images that are often overlooked in our busy way of life. This involves interpreting everyday scenes with a fresh eye and identifying those subjects that connect us. Representational landscape paintings are the result of observing natural beauty in Indiana and in the mountains and plains of our western states.

In my work I have tried to achieve simplicity in composition, boldness in color choices and brushwork, and— somewhere within the painting— a strong light-dark contrast. Favorite painters are the French and American impressionists, with special appreciation for the compositional styles of Richard Diebenkorn and Edward Hopper. Among contemporaries, artists such as Kim English and Ken Auster are admired for how they incorporate the human element into their paintings.
