Margie Clark - Polymer Clay Artist

Margie Clark

I grew up in Wabash, Indiana and moved to Indianapolis in 2000. I have always enjoyed art—starting with needlepoint, sewing, watercolor, polymer clay, acrylic painting, theatrical set building, and decorative sugar art. My home studio was a great place to explore my inner voice.

After dabbling in art over the years as a hobby, I found inspiration in color, light and creation as more than a hobby but an endless supply of fun every day. In 2020, I found polymer clay again after many years of not “playing with clay.” My home studio became my therapeutic oasis away from the world of COVID. I spent months experimenting with clay and researching other artists and techniques, eventually creating my own style.

Polymer clay is a man-made modeling material that remains soft and malleable until it is cured.

It is a versatile art medium; it can be sculpted, carved, caned, molded and is such a fun, surprising art form. I cover discarded items and put a colorful veneer of fresh new clay over the piece. This brings them back to life and back to purpose. The clay is one solid color to begin with, which is then layered, sometimes extruded, stacked, folded, rolled and finally turned into a cane, then sliced into tiny sheets and pressed on a clay sheet or often directly placed on the surface of the sculpture.

I hope you find joy and a bit of whimsy in my work. It does that for me.
