Kent was born in Evansville Indiana. He attended Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated from the IU School of Dentistry in 1971. He then completed a orthodontic specialty program and practiced orthodontics in Indianapolis until 2015.

About 15 years ago Kent started woodworking as a hobby and to make furniture for his family. He has taken numerous classes at Marc Adams School of Woodworking and now makes furniture with marquetry and inlay detail. Kent is an Indiana Artisan Furniture Guild member.
